What I expect to learn from the podcast project:
-Learn how to communicate a lot of complex information in a concise and clear manner
- Learn how to work effectively in a group, keeping in constant communication but also dividing up tasks
- Learn to use resources other than our teacher to learn things like japanese vocabulary and kanji
- Improve conversational ability, namely speed and flow
- Improve writing skills by working on a script
- Learn to work within limited knowledge: being creative to convey meaning despite a limited vocabulary
- thinking in terms of japanese, not American, structures
What communication means to me:
Like everybody, I believe that communication is, at its most basic, the transfer of ideas and feelings. Although people most often associate communication with speech and words, I would argue that communication actually comes in many different forms. An extension of verbal communication, would be music, in which composers express their feelings through melody and sound. Alternatively, one can express their ideas, and thus communicate, visually, through a painting or picture. This is why I am so excited about the podcast project: by challenging us to create a video, we will be pushed to investigate both visual and verbal forms communication. I think that such an exploration is extremely worthwhile, since many would argue that being able to express ourselves in a variety of complex ways, or being able to harness advanced forms of communication, is what makes us human.

ReplyDeleteI definitely think that with some effort that many or even all of your goals are possible. The most difficult task (for all of us, I would presume) is properly expressing ourselves in a succinct matter, given the fact that our grasp of Japanese is surely not (yet) up to par with our proficiency in English.

Yes, I agree. I think that we are proficient enough to express everything we want for this project, but because of our limited knowledge of grammar we are probably not going to be able to say things in the most direct and elegant way possible. But, then again, that is the beauty and challenge of this project! Good luck to you too!

ReplyDeleteI do not think it is a matter of resources. I think instead we will have to try to not translate in our head from English as we film the podcast, and instead let the Japanese language come naturally.
DeleteWe definitely do have to be creative in maneuvering around more complex structures that we haven't learned yet, but I believed we have enough to express our podcast topics. Communication takes so many forms, like you said, changing the music can change the whole vibe of the video. Good luck with your podcast!

Deleteこんにちは！I agree that it can be frustrating to try to express anything through the limited Japanese grammar structures available to us at the moment. However, I think your goals are great steps in gaining a comfortableness with Japanese that is not necessarily facilitated by a classroom setting.

In class, we are asked to say things that are specifically geared towards using grammar forms we know. I agree that this project is great because it allows us to apply grammar forms messages that are not necessarily tailored for learning.
DeleteI liked that you specifically pointed out each different medium is not only conveniently available out there but also comes along with its own meaning. For that very reason, some people call the modern media production as "remixing". You are not just using it to support your message but also orchestrating the messages that each media has.
